Pepsi Team Voting Bin
For several years running, Pepsi was involved a major soccer tournament called the UEFA championships that riled up all of Europe. In 2019, Pepsi wanted to spice up their activation booths and show their ever growing commitment to sustainability.
Given that the interactions would be short and the excitement level already very high, the question became, how do you positively engage fans with recycling in a brief and exciting way?

A Warm Reception
The bins ended up seeing several hundred visitations during their few short days at the UEFA championships and helped garner quite a bit of buzz for Pepsi. The bins would later go on to Pepsi’s headquarters for use in other sporting events, but not before collecting 100’s of bottles and cans.

A Look Back at Development
Early concept sketches played with various recycling-activated stations, either by having direct games that used recyclables, or by allowing festival-goers to add to the booth and DJ set with lights and directions to the DJ.
Physical Prototyping
While Pepsi took the holiday break to decide on their direction forward, we took the chance to physically prototype some of their favorites.
Final Goal Forward
After some extensive deliberation, Pepsi decided the voting bin would be the best to thrive from the already competitive spirit of the game. We took the concept and executed a few refinements.
The final manufacturing would be than TC could handle in the timeline, and needed to be in the EU regardless.
Luckily we knew a company that was already adept at creating gamified bins in the Netherlands and partnered with them to work out the construction and detailed electronics.
Bins in Production
With the UEFA event only a few short months away things had to move quickly. We worked in tandem with our partner company eWaste to develop 3D models, build plans, test electronics, problem solve and more before the bins had to be shipped out straight to their inaugural event.
Inspection Time
Within a short month we were ready for inspections, testing out a variety of waste, servicing methods, and potential issues. One thought we had the foresight to correct was cheaters. By using two layers of sensors we made it so a piece had to pass completely through the opening in order to count. A bit of cooling for hot tempers and passionate fans.
For future-proofing at the game and future events, all team names and symbols were made removeable.
Final Details and The Event
With the remaining bits of time we dialed in the final graphics, added a reuseable shipping cover, and made the core electronics as user-friendly as possible to ensure the voting bin’s extended use.
Afterwards it was onto the event seen above where we identified a few areas of improvements for future versions. Pepsi were quite pleased with the end result and we would later provide further iterations, making the bins more robust and future proofed for other events.
